Exposure compensation in the camera, which is the wheel

Quite often on relevant forums, with the emergence of particular innovations, POPs the question, why make a separate exposure compensation wheel on the camera and take it to the body, when they almost nobody uses. For some time I did not pay attention to the wonder wheel, while through trial and error did not appreciate all the benefits that can give you the right compensation.

So, what is exposure compensation in the camera for research is a "compulsory amendments to measured exposure for compensation of measurement error or achieve artistic effects" (from Wikipedia).

Once long exposure photographers were measured using the light meter, now it's all done automatically by the camera. However, even electronics are sometimes wrong, particularly in complex light situations (shooting a dark object, an object against a bright background, back light, etc.).

There are three situations:

 • Correctly exposed framewhen there is a balance between light and shadow, detail are distinguishable as light and shadows.
 • Underexposed frame is lost detail in the shadows, dark image.
 • The frame is overexposed — too much light on the sensor of the camera, some photos are very overexposed, they lack details.
Please note, in the picture there is no sky, one white spot

The photo above demonstrates what can happen if we don't think about the exposure and time to adjust. Get a photo where the sky is white spot, ... but there were clouds. In this case, it was enough to make before shooting the exposure compensation about 1 to 1.5 EV, in the picture there would be the sky, and in the editor, then you can lighten areas in shadow.

So, let us examine a simple example that gives us compensation.

The first file, shot with no exposure compensation (0EV).

In order to amend the illuminance of the received frame and to achieve the best balance between detail in bright and dark areas of image, avoid white and black spots with no detail.

Another option to use exposure compensation seems not quite logical, but it works and is reliable.

0EV exposure compensation, shutter speed 1/125c

Exposure compensation-1EV, shutter speed 1/250c

If you are in a forest saw, for example, the squirrel, want to photograph her, but I understand that exposure for shooting rolling animal is not enough, and aperture and ISO at the maximum, in this case, it is possible to reduce the exposure compensation to 1 and you get additional benefits in the excerpt. Of course, in this case, it is better to remove only in RAW.
Original Article
